The Best Military Auto Insurance: What You Need to Know

Military personnel have unique needs when it comes to auto insurance. To help them find the best coverage, many auto insurance companies offer specialized policies and discounts for service members. We looked at more than a dozen insurers to determine which ones offer the best types of coverage and discounts for military personnel. After analyzing the top 12 companies, USAA emerged as the clear winner for its exclusive coverage, incredible discounts, and excellent customer service.

USAA is a great option for military auto insurance as it exclusively serves current and former military service members and their families. It offers unique coverage, incredible discounts, and excellent customer service. USAA also provides insurance for motorcycles, recreational vehicles (RVs) and boats, as well as rideshare coverage for Lyft and Uber drivers, homeowners and renters insurance, and life insurance. Plus, USAA members can opt for additional health insurance benefits, pet insurance, and dozens of other unique coverage options.

USAA offers several unique discounts for members of the military. Active-duty military personnel who store their vehicle at a military base can receive a 15% discount. In addition, if you store your car while you are deployed abroad, USAA offers a 60% discount on your monthly premium. Children of USAA members also receive a 10% discount.

Furthermore, the USAA offers discounts based on mileage, so members of the military who live on the base or end up deployed for part of the year can save money by not accumulating miles on their vehicle. GEICO is another great option for military auto insurance. It stands for Government Employees Insurance Company and offers some of the best discounts on military auto insurance. GEICO offers policies for several vehicles, such as motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), boats and caravans.

It also has other types of coverage, such as homeowners and renters insurance, personal liability insurance, life insurance, and identity theft protection. GEICO offers a 15% discount for all active duty and retired military personnel, as well as for members of the National Guard and reserves. Armed Forces Insurance (AFI) is another great option for those in the military looking for car insurance. AFI offers a one-stop-shop for its members with car insurance as well as homeowners and renters insurance, coverage for motorcycles and other recreational vehicles, fire and flood insurance, policies for valuable items, pet insurance, and even supplemental policies. Unfortunately, AFI doesn't include specific discounts on its website but claims to offer competitive rates and a variety of discounts depending on your driving record, enrollment in several policies, and more. Finding the right car insurance can often seem like a daunting task but some companies stand out from the rest when it comes to military auto insurance.

While you should always compare rates before signing up with any company, many members of the military support companies that offer exclusive and unique coverage options for active duty service members and veterans. Keep in mind that each insurance company has different requirements when a service member is deployed overseas. Finally, some companies only offer coverage to members of the military which means that you may have more options than the average customer when looking for military auto insurance. Auto insurance providers that offer discounts for veterans include USAA, AFI, GEICO, Liberty Mutual, and Farmers Insurance. As with any coverage or discount offer you should always check with a customer service representative or local agent to get an accurate quote.
